New iPad WiFi Issues

According to a document acquired by 9to5Mac, AppleCare has confirmed that Apple is investigating the WiFi issues that many are experiencing with the WiFi-only 3rd-gen iPad. If you purchased a 4G LTE model like me, then you should be exempt from this issue. This issues has been limited to customers in the United States for some reason though:

In the United States, contact centers and retail stores should capture iPad (3rd generation) Wi-Fi only devices if they exhibit any issue related to Wi-Fi.

Symptoms can include, but are not limited to:

  • Intermittent connectivity
  • Slow Wi-Fi speeds
  • Wi-Fi network not seen.

A large number of users took this to the Apple support communities forum to complain about their slow sppeds and intermittent connections. It has been determined that this is not a normal software bug, but an actual hardware issue.

New iPad Wifi Performance

Andy Patrizio of Tablet PC Review decided to test his iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4S, iPad (1st-gen) and iPad (3rd-gen) to compare the Wi-Fi reception quality with the SpeedTest iOS app. The iPhone 4S was the clear winner of this test, would have been interesting with an iPhone 4 along with a death grip.

Internet connection speed to the servers is certainly not consistent, especially if you are subject to throttling. There is definitely a better way to test WiFi signal strength, but this method does show predictable deviations in overall data speed to the servers in Texas and California.

iPhone 4S upload speeds seem much higher, maybe the neighbors torrent uploads were turned off while testing.
